BRS Pukani leaching Phosphates

UPDATE TIME!!

So my phosphate readings have been crazy the last couple of months. It was as high as .30 ppm and the lowest my Hanna Checker showed was .11 but I have never had a problem with algae. Weird, huh. Well after dealing with all this frustration of uncontrollable phosphates, I invited a fellow reefer, who will remain nameless, to come over and test my water with his Hanna Phosphate checker. We tested and my checker was showing .20 and his showed .07 leading me to believe that my tank does not have a phosphate problem.

I contacted Hanna Instruments this morning and told them what happened. They said the units are only warrantied for 6 months but they would honor the warranty since I bought it Nov 12, 2012 and to send it in.

I am so relieved. Once I receive the checker back, I will post the new readings. I still plan on ordering one of these bad boys though....

That's good to hear. Did you replace the battery and then test again?

Yeah....it went down to .17 when i put a new battery in there but the tech said that wouldn't have an effect on the reading at all. He said that would be the equivalent of blowing into the Nintendo cartdridge.

Ive had the same issue in the past and i found out that it wasnt my machine. It was a bad batch of reagents. I would try using good reagents from other reefers and compare.

I just opened a new refil pack and was getting the similiar readings so I think it was the unit itself.

Really!? I would chalk it up to user error then:)

Nice! You can come test my water then and we'll compare the test to the Hanna Checker.

Deez Nuts!

I did quite a few comparisons over 2 weeks when I had both the hi-736 and mi412. I am quite anal with my testing technique. I got repeatable first time every time results on the hi-736, but immediate follow up tests always varied as well as did tests between different batches. The hi-736 and mi412 were similar reading when comparing first test, but the mi412 is repeatable each time, every time, no matter how many times I test.

The mi412 also uses better foil packets. It is much easier to get all of the powder out of them. I use to split open the side seams of the hi736 packets to get all the powder out.

This is why I went with your suggestion. You know what the deal is and what you're talking about!

Awesome! Did you by chance happen to research the mini?
