do you think I will be able to just silicon it to the glass if I cut it down more (cut the back side and about 2 teeth off), or will it eventually just fall?

If it does fall off it will be in about 50 years when the silicone breaks down. Just have a thick bead on the bottom edge and you'll be fine.

A nice thick bead is all you should need. That's how I sealed the small overflow on my DIY nano.

I would silicone first just to be safe.

And its just a brand name, it's still 100% silicone. Anything 100% silicone is safe.

I'll just tape off the edges and silicon over them then. Not sure how I would paint it in the tank. . .

I'd rather do black I think since there's no clear anywhere else.

Leave the area where the silicone is to bond paint free. That small over flow I made was actually white PVC. Just placed it down the way it will be installed on some flat cardboard, spray paint it waited a couple of hours to dry and sealed it up in your tank. Easy day!

Cool. Thanks. I'll probably have to take two passes on the table saw to cut it down. Hope I can do a nice clean edge. These kids need to go to sleep so I can hit the depot!
