Spartanman22's 80 DB

I have not I'd like to get my hands on a meter and take some readings though. I've been curious. I've got my white channel at 50% and blues at 60% and I'm still getting some bleaching. So I'm going to turn them down even more.

whites 50% to start with on those PR 247 units is too much i think ..

its all IMO but here is how i see it ..
Blue lighting is what increases the color as they have to put out the pigment to protect themselves and at the same time not have much zooxanthelle ( brown stuff) cause they cant do much photosynthesis. ( this can be achieved by high intensity white lighting too but then they bleach more cause white is used more for photosynthesis and they dont need that much zoox and shed it with out the pigment developing first)

what i have always done with any new lighting is to start with low whites and blues ..then drive the blues to 100% and then slowly start increasing whites till i see corals bleach or overreact.

when i had my OR 247 i started wiht 20% white and 60% blues and ended up with 45% whites and 100% blues like after 2 months .. and this is with one unit on a 50 cube.

Very good advice Tin. I did something similar with my previous setup (although never went to 100% on blues). I do need to dial down the whites. That and the lack of nutrients from a fish less display is really causing some paling in colors. But PE and growth have still been good.

I've been considering adding a UV sterilized to my system just as an added defense against any diseases. I found a good deal on a used Aqua Ultraviolet 8 watt sterilizer. It's a bit undersized for my system but I can slow down the feed to it. I know this by no means solves disease issues, but this coupled with a good QT regime should keep my DT happy and healthy. I'm also hoping it'll give me a little better clarity as well.

On a different topic, last night I was observing the tank and thought I saw a flatworm on a small bonsai frag. I inspected the frag like crazy and couldn't find any eggs or flatworms. There was just one small light patch on one of the branches, which is easily spotted on a bonsai. So needless to say it got a Bayer dip and will get a couple more over the next couple weeks. I inspected several other corals and couldn't find any signs whatsoever of aefw. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. All new frags are dipped in Bayer, bases lightly scrubbed with a toothbrush, and removed from their plugs and either glued directly to rock or placed on a new plug. So, I should be pretty well protected. But all it takes is 1 egg...

Personally, I think UV sterilizers are a waste of $, especially if the purpose is for disease prevention.

I've heard arguments both ways. I've never personally run one before, but I figure this is so dang cheap why not give it a try. If anything it'll just help with water clarity. It won't do much towards eradicating any disease, but may help also with keep algae blooms suppressed, bacterial blooms, etc.

Added a couple small hermits and a coral banded shrimp to the office tank today.

Also added a Sicce power head and it's just about the perfect amount of flow.

I found my pink margin wrasse in rough shape this morning. He was laying upside down on the bottom of the QT. I gently prodded him and he swam straight up and would stick his head out of the water. All other fish's behavior seems perfectly normal. This wrasse has been in the CP treatment for over a week now. I know there are some reported cases of wrasses responding poorly to CP. So, maybe that's the issue.

My death toll since pulling all fish to the QT has risen to 5, with a potential 6th today. 3 of those deaths (potters, Multibar, swallowtail) were all directly related to velvet, but I've now had 2 random deaths in the Scopas and Lyretail and a possible 6th in the pink margin.

I'm not really sure what to make of it. Water quality has not been an issue. I've been performing 25% water changes every other day and ammonia has stayed in the "safe" zone. This is my first serious go around at QTing in my 9 years of reefing and I don't think I've ever had this many disease related deaths before. I know QT is the right way to go, but man it kinda makes you second guess it.

damn this sucks ..

i dont really know much about fish deaths and QT as i never qt but true QT is a lot of stress on both them and us .. :(

hopefully your other fish comeout sucessfully treated and live happily ever after in the reef :( that tank deserves some beautiful fish ..

Well Adam I don't think it's what your doing as much as it's the nature of the beast , I feel that the fish are just over stressed and you are looking for a explanation but really there immune system is low from stress. I had ich about 6 months into stocking the tank and was losing fish 1 a week , I talked to Mario and asked what I could do to bet this in my reef tank and the only thing he said is feed garlic with my food, from the day he told me that I haven't lost another fish , he told me that the garlic will boots there immune system and give themchance to bet whatever attacks them. Give it a try and see what happens
Im sorry this is happening to you.

I do use selcon with all my food. I soak it prior to feeding. I can live with the three angel deaths as I know those were directly related the a losing battle with velvet. It's the other three random deaths that are so frustrating! I honestly think it was secondary infections brought on by weakend immune systems. There's no doubt the Ich shield works for velvet. As it cleared symptoms within a week. However from what I've read a drawback to CP is lowered immune responses. That coupled with stress leaves the back door wide open for secondary infections that likely in a healthy stress free environment would never take hold.

Oh well live and learn. It doesn't help that I was forced to QT so many fish at once resulting in an overstocked QT. it should be smoother sailings after I get through the velvet fallow period and can go back to QTing 2-3 fish at a time, not 8.

But enough negativity, on to some exciting stuff! I just received my shipment from PIA and all three multibars came in great! The largest of the three is the fattest dwarf angel I've ever seen! And the smallest of the three is the smallest dwarf angel I've ever seen!

I'm noticing some aggression from the largest towards the two smaller individuals so hopefully that subsides.

beautiful

Thanks man, they're pretty awesome. Hopefully they'll eat well! In my experience with multibars the ones that eat prepared foods well are more reef safe. The ones that don't eat well end up being bad nippers. I've also found younger individuals are better feeders.

Well figured out why I lost the pink margin... Was looking at the QT today and realized the HOB filter wasn't going. Checked the power strip and realized it had come slightly unplugged thus shutting off the filter and heater. It's a loose out light so it doesn't take much of a bump to dislodge it. I'm pretty pissed at myself but it is nice knowing why I lost the fish. Thank goodness I didn't loose anything else!

Well no luck on feeding the trio today. The smallest and medium multibars showed interest but no bites. I'll try some clam on the half shell later.

The smallest Multibar is breathing more rapidly than the other two. I'm not sure if it's because he's just so small or if it's stressed. I think the big one is picking on him still. Doesn't appear to be nearly as bad as yesterday but certainly not gone.

The smallest is also skinny so I'd like to get him eating ASAP. The large and medium multibars are porkers. So I think I've got some more time to play with on those two.

Good luck on the multibars man those are some cool looking fish! Are they supposed to school?
