Spartanman's cube

Today was the end of week one of vodka dosing. Next week will be daily doses of 0.9 mL. My parameters are as follows:

Alk: 8.15
Ca: 420
PO4: Undetectable
NO3: ~30
pH: 8.20
Temp: 78.0
Salinity: 1.025

After a week of vodka and a 10 gallon water change nitrates have come down about 10 ppm. Hopefully this trend continues

I'd like to know as well!

Lol didn't want to junk up your thread.
My scribbled rabbit died Saturday morning from internal parasites. And now red cyano breakout

So, I've been reading a few other instances where people have had issues with sps and burnt tips and slow tissue necrosis. The other cases attributed it to exhausted RODI filters. They all claimed that their TDS meters still read zero but their source water used chloramines and once they changed filters things started turning around. Like I mentioned the other day it has been a while since I've changed filters. I picked up a new sediment and carbon block from AP today, but I think I'll also be picking up a membrane as well. If my carbon block and sediment filters have been exhausted for a while there's a goof chance the membrane is fried as well. Especially since it's so old.

I'm curious to if the source water may be my nitrate issue. I'm going to run a nitrate test on my RODI tomorrow prior to replacing the filters.

Absolutely not Ed. I knew my filters needed replacing. I just started finding some instances where bad filters resulted in similar issues I'm having.

Are RO membranes universal? For example I know HD carries RO membranes and so does AquaPros. Are they all the same thing?

My plan of attack is to switch out the filters and then do a series of large water changes to try and flush out my system.

Make sure you get the right membrane for instance 50,75,100 gpd whatever your unit is rated for, go for a quality filter like Dow and if you have time eBay has them for $27 ea just need to look around as far as size goes as long as you order the correct gpd they should fit your canister.

Tom

Thanks Tom I know AP has some in stock. I have a 75 gpd filter so I'll check and see if they have the appropriate filter in stock. I'd like to get it sooner than later so that I can start getting water changes done.

Really bummed about losing this guy. He was such an awesome fish. I'd love to get another, but it's hard to justify such an expensive fish again. Especially knowing he found his way our of a covered tank.

One of the perks of running a wastewater laboratory is having access to some testing instrumentation that wouldn't normally be available to the average hobbyist. I collected a sample of my RODI effluent this morning to see if my exhausted filters hypothesis was correct. I ran a nitrate and residual chlorine test on the sample and to my surprise received non-detect results for both analyses. I was sure this was the issue. Now granted I did not (and am not capable) of sampling for chloramines, which could still be the issue. I checked Forest Parks website for an Annual Water Analysis Report, but they only have one from 2012...

I was pretty convinced this may have been the issue. I found some instances where others had similar symptoms and found that it was their RODI filters that were exhausted. Burnt tips on SPS with normal and consistent alk parameters, slow decay of colonies. But it must just be my elevated nitrates-which also makes sense since all my zoanthids are looking great as of late. So, I will still replace my sediment, carbon block, DI resin, and membrane because they are all well over their recommended lifespans, but I will continue with the vodka/MB7 dosing and try to bring down those nitrates. It appears to be moving in the right direction. I already have a 5-10 ppm reduction in nitrates after one week of vodka dosing.

Sorry about the loss... Great pics

Just replaced the sediment filter, carbon block, and DI resin on my rodi. The resin was totally exhausted and had a strong chlorine smell...I'm going to do 10 gallon water changes over the next 3 or 4 days to try and flush out the old water.

Ya me too! It certainly can't hurt. I'm going to pick up a Rubbermaid so that I can do a large water change all at once
