The journey begins - Elos 120 XL

100% agree on "open space" being valuable....

Was just thinking that there are very few of us that can home (in an aesthetically balanced way) something like a big bad a$$ Haddoni

Or....well I'll stop there :)

I need opinion on background , black or blue ???

I love tanks with blue backgrounds. They just really pop so much more than black. The only caveat is that you've got to keep them really clean. You seem like just the guy to do it.......go blue!

If your feeling crazy, have somebody airbrush it so it fades from light blue at the top to dark blue at the bottom. It gives an awesome perception of depth.

Edit.....guess I should have read a few more posts. Black is cool too!

Lol,my last background was blue and I liked it a lot. What made my go black was, that I want my overflow and any pumps to blend with my background. I thought for a while to spray my powerheads blue, but figured why the extra work, just go black.

Not much to update, I sold my ATI hybrid, as I will not need this light for this project. Decided to stay with NPS corals and create deepwater biotope. Mostly sun corals, dendros, some NPS gorgonians and tube anemones. Fish will be group of 7-9 deepwater Anthias ( to be determined later which type), Tinker butterfly, possibly deepwater dwarf angel. Aquascape chenged a little to mimic a deep vertical drop. Light will be one Coral Compulsion 20K bulb ( thanks DJE !). In person this looks great, not sure pictures will do it justice. I am very happy so far with this. Next weekend I plan to paint a closet where my filtration will be and install sump and refugium. I want good size refugium to create big population of pods that will be dripped to DT, so my Anthias will get extra food.

Few pictures of how the tank looks now

Big skimmer, like it, always a great place to start. What's the egg crate under your rock, will that stay? Why the siporax, won't live rock cover you?

Basically big skimmer, refugium with deep sand bed, chateo and siporax.

What water quality levels do you aim for with your NPS tanks? How far up the scales can po4 and no3 be and still have the corals be happy? I'd think higher than sps, but nt fowlr high, just not sure.

Eggcrate under rock is to spread pressure over bigger area, rock is very heavy . I always used siporax, even with SPS , with this type of tank I am doing now, I can use any help with filtration as I can. I expect to feed this tank anywhere from 5-10 cubes of frozen food daily.

Looking good and glad the CC LED bulb works!

Hey Josh, water paremeters will be almost reef like, with exception of nitrates a little higher probably no higher then 20 ppm. Again deep sand, siporax , chateo and skimmer should keep everything in check.

Are you going to have turtles in there also?
The island above water lvl?
....ive seen some overseas tanks with corals and fish and turtles....it looked real nice.

Wow, you will need all the filtration help you can get. Siporax, reminds of the Eheim ceramic's that have been around for 30-40 yrs. You'll place these free in your refugium?

Yes, pretty much very similar. Siporax has been around for w while too. Basically it provides extra porous surface for bacteria, just like LR, but i can have less volume then LR and more bacteria. Somewhere it states 1Liter of siporax takes care of 100 gal. I will have 10 liters in my sump.
