mlreef 450 gallon mixed reef build

Hi Mike it looks great I see the one side sits on the header so I'm assuming that the other side does as well right? If it does then your in good shape. All you have to sister up is the width of the base of your cabinet. You don't have to go beyond that. Nail them together or put spacers in between every 16" and nail both side to the spacer ( spacer= a piece of 2x4 the height of the joist installed vertically every 16").

Awesome, It was a true pain but it spans the full 16' 6" and rests on the flat 2x6 that lays on top of the steel I beam. The joist sits flat and firmly on the 2x6 completely, the joist is actually about 6" longer than what it needs to be so that the additional 6" over hangs by 3" on both sides of the I beam. hope that makes sense...

I will definitely use the 2x4 vertical idea every 16". Should I lag bolt the joists together or screw or nail? Also I was thinking about using some liquid nails as well, what are your thoughts on that?

Thanks for everything.

You are nuts!
I would not tear up my house for a tank. Well, come to think of it, I probably would. Just unlikely I'd get approval from the "boss".... :ballchain:

Oh Yea no need for liquid nails 3" screws would be fine unless you have a framing gun.

I'm thinking I might need longer screws, The LVL is 1 5/8" and then the 2x4 and then into the original joist, I'm thinking I would have to end up using 4 1/2" screws, what do you think?

I don't really see the need for the 2x4 spacers, unless you need the extra 1-1/2 inches to catch the edge of your stand.
If your adding them to make them stronger I would use plywood in between the joists

WOW, great built!!!
you must love your wife bro. she is the best. She let you built this expensive tank...

All I have to say is that she is absolutely the best wife in the world for putting up with all of my shenanigans. I also think that she secretly loves the aquarium as well.

I should have some additional pictures coming this weekend of the sump from Anthony @ Nano Sea Creations, stand and canopy painted, and joists all finished up in the basement. Being a teacher has it perks, I have a 3 day weekend to get this all done, thank you Mr. Abraham Lincoln!

I snapped a couple of pictures of things that I just picked up.

I should have some more pics of the stand and canopy tomorrow.

Thank you Bill for the very kind words. It was great meeting you today. I'm sure that I will be back a couple more times now that I know how to get there a much easier way. Your setup is coming along fabulously. I really like the LED lighting that you have, not to mention your amazing list of live stock! And I will definitely be placing that order through BRS for that pukani rock; what you showed me was amazing! Thanks again, next time I see you I will bring you some beer and wine that I used to import, I think that you'll like it.
