Rich's SF Build

Rich. I order you to come back to Chicago and trade me some coral! Killer stuff man; I can't wait to see it grow out. :)

Nice tank and pics. So do you miss your old frag tank? I bet not anymore! I finally have some of my frags in it! What's your sump setup? Love that nem!
What camera/lens you have? Those pics are great!

The little frag tank was a lot easier to take care of, but it was way to crowded. I have a hoarding personality and couldn't resist the next cool thing. Still like that but I have a little more space to work with.

My new set-up has no sump. There is a rear chamber (all-in-one) style where I keep the filtration media in. I run chemipure and carbon as well as a small clump of cheato. That's about it though besides having filterfloss over the two overflows. Everything seems to be doing just fine the way I have it so I won't be adding a skimmer to the set-up.

As far as photography. I have a Pentax DSLR (I was in Korea when I bought it and it was a lot cheaper than Nikon or Canon). For the coral shots I use a Tamron 90mm 1:1 Macro lens. I love the lens and I believe they make one for every DSLR body. The really key thing to taking good macro shots though is having a really solid tripod. Manfrotto makes some of the best. Lets you get longer exposures and open up the aperature.

+infinity...I think I could have an 8ft x 3ft tank and still look like a hoarder. We should start a group ;)

Dude your tank looks awesome! All sexy pieces in there lol!

And I agree with Jay, we need to start a coral hoarders group lol!

Can't wait to see your 10 new acquisitions :spy:

How did I miss this thread? Your tank is fantastic, everything looks great. Love your aquascape too. I might have miss it, but I just saw one Kessil on one of your pictures, is this what you are still using for lights? How about some "under the hood" pictures of your filtration? Again great pictures!!! :)

tank looks awesome rich, really like how u posted ur levels during the cycle might have to steal that one :)

Lets answer these questions.

1. You missed this thread because you probably have better things to do than troll tank build threads :) Glad you found it though

2. I'm still only using the single Kessil A360W. I was skeptical at first but because Kessil is so popular out here I gave it a shot. I've been really impressed so far in terms of coral color (especially LPS and zoas) and the way you can take pictures with the light. You have seen my pictures. I hardly touch the white balance and the colors come out very true to life. No post processing.

A side note. The Kessil factory is literally 15 miles from my apartment and they invited a local club to visit this weekend. I'm very impressed with their technology. A few things I took away from the tour. They are using a true UV spectrum in their lights (sub 400 nanometers). They achieve the color they do because it is a single point light source. They litterally have 60 LEDs within a space the size of a quarter. It is then passed through a lens to narrow the light down instead of spread the light out. They basically lay all of the leds on a semi-flat chip so the natural spread of the light is 180 degrees. The put the lens on the light to narrow it down to 140 degrees.

3. As for filtration. You can see the design I had made for the all in one chamber in the back. I bought some egg-crate and built structures for both sides which will hold filter floss on top and whatever filter media I choose. All the water has to flow through those two chambers. On the right side of the tank I have a bag of active carbon and an airstone to make sure I'm getting as much of the CO2 out of the water and putting a little more oxygen back.

On the left side I have both chemipure elite and purigen. Below those two I have a wad of chaeto. I have two rio 1100 plus return pumps.

Here is one of the recent purchases I made :)

Thanks man. I'm really impressed with the Dr. Tim's product. I've had no spikes since the third day. Good coraline growth and almost no film on the sides. It gets two thumbs up from me.
