Spartanman22's 80 DB

A floating hood isn't really an option. I don't like the look of it hanging from the ceiling. This was my original plan and I was going to bolt it into the wall. But I don't want to go to those extremes in an apartment. I'll save that for the house. I'm going to order that Amazon fixture and give it a shot. Hopefully it works out well. The fixture is 3" deep and I need 2.75 to fit the OR fixtures.

On another note I woke up this morning to my stand full of water and the carpet in front of the tank soaking wet. My skimmer went crazy at some point last night and started overflowing, filling up the storage container causing the stand to fill up with water and the carpet to soak. On top of that my tank was replacing with fresh top off water so my salinity went from 34 ppt to 30 ppt overnight.

Of course I have yet to install the shut-off float in the skimmer waste container and setup the ALD module. So you can guess what I'm doing this evening.

Ive been there way too many times. I finally decided to place a valve on my drain so that i manually drain it once a week with out removing anything.
It used to overflow and drain into a container. But there was times when who knows what the hell happened and the overflow container overflowed overnight into the wood floors and to the basement same salinity drop .

So question for ya....
Youre ok with hanging that big ass grow light to the ceiling but the canopy isnt an option?
With similar chain/cable to a joist in the ceiling would be the same amount of holes drilled to the ceiling for the floating canopy.

And when ya move...put some tooth paste in the hole and call it a day

Ya it sucks. Oh well live and learn. But yes I'd rather hang the fixture than build the canopy. My parents are mid divorce and during the process my dad has gotten rid of all of his tools which are what I used to build the current stand. So building a matching canopy would be a little tricky at this point. Plus it's cost me more too. I'd have building supplies, the cost of 4 T5 retrofits at about $250. Not to mention I had 2 sets of T5 retrofit kits back when I was originally planning on going this route. I sold them for basically BOGO free. So I'm not buying them again. This is the more economical route. I already have the two OR's. It's just a matter of buying a T5 fixture to gut or there's still the option of running 3 OR's.

My setup already has the Elos Planet hanging and that thing weighs like 35 lbs.

If I don't like the look of the fixture I can always go back and make a pine board skin to wrap around it and paint it to match my stand. We'll see how the DIY project comes out first though before I do that.

That's probably what I'll end up doing. But first I've got to decide if I really want to go the DIY T5/LED route or go full LED with 3 OR's. My thinking is the T5's will give me a bit better light distribution preventing shadowing and just filling in the color a bit more.

But I think from an aesthetics view having three OR's hung would look nicer. I like that my current light is not as big as my tank.

sorry i might have missed but why not just get a chiller ? instead of going thru all this ?

Chillers are expensive and it'll add to the electricity cost. Chiller would keep the tank temp down but the ambient room temperature would still be affected by the halides.

Should have put a disclaimer.
Thats a random google image
Didnt mean to misslead. Was used as referance as what could be done

Spartanman, you can create a floating hood without ceiling mounting it. Just make frame rectangular legs that sit on each side of the top of the tank. It would be easy to make it adjustable height as well.

I think ultimately what I'll end up doing is making a skin out of line board for my DIY T5/LED fixture unless it comes out really well. I order a fixture that looked pretty nice on Amazon and have a second OR-T247 on the way.

Isn't the purpose for the cup drain to avoid this? If your cut drains into a sealed container, once it's full, no more liquid can go into it. If your skimmer goes crazy, the worst that happens is that your skimmer overflows back into the sump, but all of the nastiness stays in the collection cup?

I created one of these out of a 1 liter bottle, but haven't given it a try yet. Although I'm pretty sure this is how it would work. Were you just using an open container to collect the skim?

Well my cup was a roughly 1.5 liter talk Tupperware type thing. It had a snap lid but I guess the snap lid didn't seal all that well and it seeped out the seams. I'd love to get a skimmate locker but can't fit on inside my stand. I've got a few extra float switches laying around. I'm going to install on in the collection container for a fail safe.

So last night I noticed some white spots on the Scopas . Not sure how that happened since he went through TTM. I'm not quite sure yet how I'm going to tackle this one. Ideally pull them out and do another round of TTM maybe do like 6-8 transfers this time. But I'm not sure how/where I'm going to store them while I leave my DT fallow for 2.5 months. There's 8 fish total so it's got to be something fairly substantial.

On a more positive note, I added a large cleaner shrimp yesterday and the instant that guy touched the rock every fish (except the clowns) was huddled around him trying to get themselves cleaned. He was a bit too stressed to do anything yet, but still it was a pretty comical sight.

Also, if I'm going to be pulling everyone out to treat I may consider removing the swallowtail. I love her, especially since I nursed her back to health after almost killing her (accidentally chased her right into the blue gig) but she's turned into quite the bully. I'm considering replacing her with a Juvi majestic angel.

I also get my T5 fixture today so maybe I'll have some time to start gutting it and installing the OR. Looking forward to this I do enjoy DIY projects
