Spartanman's cube

I took advantage of this Black Friday and picked up almost all remaining items for my upgrade. With the move in April I feel like I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I also was able to get a good chunk of the stand completed. All that's left are some final touches and to build the QT tank's matching stand.

I picked up an Apex MPR from Aquarium Specialty during the BF sales and wasn't expecting much, I mean a probe holder is a probe holder nothing too exciting right? Wrong! This thing is very nice. It's made of acrylic not plastic, nice finish to it, strong magnet, magnet has a little foam pad to prevent scratching the glass/acrylic. The packaging was very nice too.

Ha i was just looking at these looked nice i ended up ordering a dif brand though since i really only need it for ph probe I ordered

I was looking at the Vertex since all my sump equipment is vertex but I liked that this had 4 probe holes and one specifically larger for the apex temp probe. I probably wouldn't pay the normal full price for this but the door buster price was a good deal!

I picked up one of the final pieces of the pulse for my 80 gallon DB build. Other than a few odds and ends, all the key pieces have been acquired. Now it's just a matter of waiting until April!

Thanks again to Mark for the awesome light!

I've been having to crank up the alk and calcium dosing the past couple days. Tested today and alk was 6.5. Let's hope those sps keep sucking it up and growing!

In preparation for a 2 week vacation I ordered one of these to keep an eye on things

In preparation of my vacation I did a 5 gallon water change, trimmed the chaeto, sucked out the detritus in the sump, fixed the frag tank drain, cleaned the skimmer, setup the IP camera, and tested all parameters - its been a busy night! Last night my alk was at about 6.5 and I adjust the dosing pump. This evening I was back to 7.2. I'll continue to check daily to make sure its dialed in correctly.

I'm still not too happy with how my tank is progressing. Some SPS are encrusting and coloring up nicely, while others are still just blah. All of the blah pieces are pieces that made it through the nitrate fiasco I had this fall. They are likely still recovering and may continue to look blah for some time. It does seem that all newly added pieces are doing really well minus one blue tenius mini-colony. Yesterday it started stning a bit on some of the tips. I'm guessing this has a bit to do with the lowered alk and a bit to do with bleaching. A few of my other pieces do look to be getting a bit too much light. I lowered the LED intensities down by about 5%.

I have since stopped dosing vodka at the moment. I added a marine pure ceramedia plate in my return chamber, plus have finally gotten my chaeto growing. I'll continue to monitor and keep track, but I don't think I'll need to go back to vodka dosing. I don't intend to increase the bioload anymore, but will experiment with some coral foods and amino acids to try and color up a few SPS.

Picture update to follow

You can really see how the lighting may be too intense on this piece. It was tan when I got it. It's white now. Portions of it that are shaded a bit are still tan.

Can't capture this one with the phone. It's more of a gold than a green.

Half of this blue gomezi had some stn. I think it's stopped at this point. The other half has showed some growth. So a bit strange.

Where does your Alk normally sit at?

About 7.1-7.3. My sps have been encrusting quite a bit lately so the consumption jumped a little

Back from vacation time for an update!

Made it through three weeks and only lost a small RR Yellow Mamba frag. I had a blue gomezi colony stn but was able to save 3 frags, so not chalking that up as a loss!

This past week I've decided to get aggressive with my apstasia problem. I added 4 peppermints to the frag tank, which took care of the small to medium sized nems, and added a small copperband to the display. I know they are hit and miss for apstasia but it was small and I liked it .

Unfortunately my blue gig made a nice snack out of the copperband . I watched my gig spit up the skeleton two days later. Other than that things have been going well.

Only 3 more months until I move and get to setup the 80 gallon. I've got the stand almost 100% done, just need to finish up the doors. Next project will be the QT stand and electrical cabinet.

One of the final pieces of my 80 gallon upgrade project arrived today. It was on back order for 6 weeks when I ordered, but it's finally here! All I can say is wow! This thing does not belong tucked away in a cabinet, it's way to sleek to not have on display.

I'll get pictures up of the unit later, but for now a box teaser
